This week’s selection is His Highness the Aga Khan’s 2006 commencement address at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

In this seminal speech, the Aga Khan discusses democracy at length, noting that “our challenge is not to find alternatives to democracy, but to find more and better ways to make democracy work.” To this end he suggests four aspects of democracy where improvements should be made:

  • Greater flexibility in defining the paths to democracy.
  • Greater diversity in institutions which participate in democratic life.
  • Expanding the public’s capacity for democracy.
  • Greater integrity in public institutions.
